A flamenco show never has just one star: several artists come together on stage to shape the performance. At La Cantaora, the weekly cast blends singing, dance, guitar and percussion into the show. Here is what role each one plays.
The cante: the voice that tells the story
The cante is the voice of flamenco: the singer performs the lyrics that give emotional meaning to the show, from the livelier styles to the deepest ones. In an intimate tablao like La Cantaora, with room for around 60 people, you can appreciate every nuance of the voice up close, something that gets lost in larger venues.
The guitar: rhythm and harmony
The guitarist sets the beat, accompanies the singer and responds to the dancer in real time. Flamenco guitar does not just accompany: it introduces changes in intensity, melodic passages and silences that shape the flow of the show, from sevillanas or tangos to the closing bulerias.
The dance: the body as an instrument
The dancer turns the voice and the guitar into movement. Footwork, arm movements and the way the body holds the rhythm are, in themselves, another instrument within the show. In a small tablao, the closeness lets you see the footwork and the expression behind every dance in detail.
Hand claps and percussion: the pulse of the group
Hand claps mark and reinforce the rhythm, usually provided by the artists themselves throughout the show. Alongside them, percussion, typically played on a flamenco cajon, adds rhythmic depth and helps sustain the energy during the most intense moments, such as the closing bulerias.
Between singing, guitar, dance, hand claps and percussion, a show at La Cantaora usually brings together 4 to 5 artists per performance, all live.
A cast that changes every week
At La Cantaora the cast is renewed every week, so the singer, dancer, guitarist and percussionist you see on your visit may be different if you come back another day. This variety gives each show its own character, even though the overall structure stays the same.
Keep in mind that the cast may also vary depending on the day and the specific show time you attend.
