JOSÉ PEÑA MÉNDEZ, Gypsy singer, better known by his stage name José Méndez, was born in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) on November 23, 1966, coming from a family of singers known as the Méndez family. He is a direct relative of “La Paquera de Jerez” and the grandson of “El Pili”, a renowned flamenco singer.
He has numerous TV performances: “Puerta del Cante” on CANAL SUR, with the guitar of Moraíto Chico. “Arte y Artista” on T.V.I., where an entire program was dedicated to him with the guitar of Parrilla de Jerez. “3×4” on T.V.2, recorded at the Andalusian Flamenco Foundation with other artists from Jerez, featuring guitar, dance, and singing. “A Compás” on ONDA JEREZ T, as well as at various Bulería festivals and Flamenco Fridays. He also stands out for his international career, spending 6 months in Japan at the Tablao Flamenco Tokyo with Eva la Yerbabuena, El Mistela, etc. He has performed with all the major dance figures such as Mario Maya, Manolete, El Guito, Manuela Carrasco, Cristina Hoyos, Carmen Cortés, Farruco (at the 1992 Barcelona Expo), etc. And solo at international festivals in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and England.
In 1987, he participated with other artists from Jerez in the album produced by Pepe de Lucía “De Santiago a la Plazuela”. In 1989, he sang on the Christmas carol album of the Caja de Ahorros de Jerez with the guitar of Parrilla de Jerez. He recorded a solo album accompanied by Juan Carmona, which also features the guitarist Moraíto Chico. The album is called “Entre dos Barrios”.
